Why Should You Start a Physiotherapy Business with Recover Physio?
Insufficient NHS funding means there is a significant gap in physiotherapy services. With the sector struggling, more private practices are necessary - and this is where you can help! Our franchisees don’t need any physiotherapy experience, as Recover Physio will provide all the necessary training and support.
Many of us will experience issues with our movement and mobility in our lifetimes, and when it happens it’s a huge comfort knowing that something can be done to help. Physiotherapy can be employed as an effective long-term way of easing pain or improving movement for patients of all ages.
Whether for rehabilitation from injuries or surgeries, pain management, posture correction, or as a preventative measure, physiotherapy is of utmost importance for many individuals. However, with the NHS struggling there are many patients all over the UK who simply aren’t getting the care they need.
At the moment, demand for physiotherapy services significantly outstrips supply. This is where you come in.
NHS Cutbacks in the Physiotherapy Space
There is a gap in the physiotherapy market caused by a lack of NHS funding. In a statement in 2023, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) said: “Without action to train and retain more physio and physio support workers it is difficult to see how new initiatives can be taken forward.”
In previous years physiotherapy was a hands-on therapy that the NHS would provide to patients who needed it, but unfortunately due to these cuts it is no longer provided to a satisfactory level. Now, the extent of the support patients often receive is an exercise sheet with some of the recommended exercises – but nothing more.
For patients that need physiotherapy to improve their pain or movement, this is not a long-term solution that addresses the long term causes.
Unfortunately, it’s not a new problem. A survey from the CSP way back in 2011 found that 74% of physiotherapy patients said they were seeing rationing or reductions in the quality of services as a result of budget cuts. The trend towards less and less physiotherapy support from the NHS was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which sped up and cemented the changes.
Why Is There So Much Demand for Physiotherapy Services in the UK?
Physiotherapy is key for many individuals to improve or restore their physical movement and mobility after a traumatic event or as a result of long-term illness or condition. For the best results and to see the best improvement, hands-on physiotherapy is a necessary requirement for these patients.
The lack of physiotherapy accessibility is having widespread impacts. The CSP estimates that more than 2.8 million people are currently unable to work due to ill health or impairment. This could be significantly improved by access to physiotherapy.
The CSP said in 2023 that there is currently one physiotherapist for every 1,136 people in the UK. With the NHS chronically overloaded, it simply doesn’t have the capacity to deal with these patients, meaning many are left in chronic pain or being unable to recover from very treatable issues.
Now, many patients are now turning to private clinics to get the level of care they need. More high-quality physiotherapy clinics are essential, to increase the number of patients all over the UK who can be treated.
